The protagonist is stuck between two different cultural ways of handling a terminal disease. Torn between the two and her love for her grandmother--who appears to also symbolize the warmth of a childhood that is now forever gone, Billi also realizes there is no way of going back, really. I am not Chinese, but this film resonates so much more than being a Chinese American and explores that in-betweenness, where one is forever stuck once one leaves a place to live in another. No trip back will be a real return because what is left behind is never the same. The Farewell is a beautifully made film with a seemingly simple story. When it finishes, you may not think it hit you with a bang, but it does stay with you for a longtime and haunt you with its humaneness, little moments, and the phenomenal soundtrack that captures the affect of the film so well. The Farewell is an excellent example of how a story is told makes all the difference. I saw some people marked the film as boring. If you are into fast-paced Hollywood films and need to be entertained at all times, yes this may not be the film for you. However, taste is socially constructed, and that judgment might say more about you than about the film. The Farewell is a film made with much warmth, gentleness, and an excellent sense of humor. The Farewell turned out to be a brilliant movie all around. If you start this and think it’s a little slow to boot, stick with it, you won’t be disappointed. 4 ½ stars. What’s it about? Billi learns her Nǎinai (grandmother) has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Her family doesn’t want Billi to visit as she wears her heart on her sleeve and the family has decided to not tell Nǎinai of her condition. Billi doesn’t listen and goes to see her grandmother much to the family’s dismay. From there, the film picks up the pace as Nǎinai is handling the wedding of Billi’s cousin, Hao Hao. Other elements of the film include: humor, moral dilemmas between the old and young, changes between the generations, examining identity and what’s important in life, some history (ex. egg rations), and quite a bit more. The cast did an excellent job. A couple quotes from the movie: “You guys moved West long ago. You think one’s life belongs to oneself, but that’s the difference between the East and the West. In the East, a person’s life is a part of a, society. ” “Life is not just about what you do, it’s more about how you do it. ” “I don’t like to put all my emotions on display, like I’m in a zoo. ” I highly recommend, even if this isn’t your typical watch. The director, producers, and cast should be winning awards for this one. A side note, that doesn’t affect the films rating, is the subtitles. They are sometimes difficult to see and cannot be changed (ex. dinner table scene with white plates and subtitles are in white). Parental guidance/trigger warnings: talks about cancer, mention of war injury. I do not recall any swearing. I remember the hospital scene in the trailer playing as if they’re discussing Nai Nai’s cancer with the doctor, in English, the doc presuming she doesn’t speak the language, until Aqufina’s character points out Nai Nai studied in the US and does, yet in the movie it plays as if Nai Nai doesn’t speak English and so isn’t understanding the discussion, which of course does not deliver the joke as the scene in the trailer did. Ah well. The Farewell is a quietly funny film once again dealing with the differences arising from being domestic Chinese vs Chinese from abroad, in this case from the US. Here the differences arise mostly from Awkwafina’s character, who on learning that her grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer is also told that no one in the family wants her to go back as they all feel she’ll blow the secret. No one has told Nai Nai as is apparently Chinese custom; they feel the news of her mortality would unnecessarily burden her. Awkwafina shows up anyway, to everyone’s surprise and Nai Nai’s delight. A some have noted, she does seem to be a one tone character, with a stooped shoulder droopy face stance in most scenes. While she’s still the liveliest of the bunch, she’s not the wise cracking smart ass Awkwafina has made a name for. There’s also not a lot going on elsewhere in the family. Was it “Monsoon Wedding” where a similar international family gathering, in the Old Country, for a wedding (as is the stated premise here) that the audience not only moves towards the climatic moment but also learns some dramatic news about members of the family, from pedophilia to spousal abuse in the process? None of that here. It seems that the “happy couple” getting married aren’t all that happy to be getting hitched and even Nai Nai suspects something is off, yet we never go there. Even the end of the film is a bit of a wheeze. It seems as if the director was afraid to look behind closed doors and bring out the backstories that might have made this film meatier. All in all entertaining, in a somber yet still humorous manner. But it the depth mortality should bring to such a film. The latest oddball concoction from French iconoclast Quentin Dupieux stars Jean Dujardin as a man who falls in love with his jacket. After making, among others, a movie about a tire with a killer instinct and a film about telepathy between humans and animals — Rubber (2010) and  Wrong  (2012), respectively — why not also tell a story about a guy who falls head-over-heels in love with his fringed suede jacket? It’s all in a day’s work for French oddball musician and occasional director Quentin Dupieux, who opened the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight this year with his slight but quite amusing  Deerskin (Le Daim). The Artist  star Jean Dujardin plays a clueless wannabe filmmaker who’ll go to great lengths to become the sole person on the planet — or at least the mountain village where he’s checked into a creepy hotel — to actually wear a coat. And it is Dujardin’s presence that’ll ensure a greater measure of visibility than usual for a Dupieux project. But despite a few good gags and committed performances, the nagging suspicion that this eccentric concept would’ve worked better as a medium-length work or even a short remains. It’ll be released in France on June 19. The film, in the washed-out colors familiar from Dupieux’ previous work, opens with a strange scene that sees three youths line up and, one after the other, dump their jackets into the trunk of a beat-up old Audi while they solemnly proclaim: “I swear to never wear a jacket again for as long as I live. ” This later turns out to be part of a film-within-a-film that’s being shot, with a tiny camcorder and zero cinema experience, by Georges (Dujardin), a deadbeat dumped by his wife. Perhaps as a way to deal with his misfortune, he has driven to a small village in the Alps to buy a $9, 000 jacket made of the titular material from an elderly slob (Julie Delpy’s actor father Albert, in a cameo). Never mind that it’s kinda small on his burly frame: George feels like, well, nine thousand bucks. As a bonus, the old man gives Georges an old camcorder, which becomes the prop that informs the lie that he’s actually in town to make a film (he’s supposedly alone because his fancy producers are in Siberia for an elaborate fight scene). This duly impresses the local bartender, Denise (Adele Haenel, from  BPM), an amateur editor and full-time gamine who becomes involved in Georges’ completely improvised plan to make a mockumentary. The subject is a ruthless man much like him, who will do anything to become the sole person in the world allowed to wear the only jacket left in existence, so his prized new possession can finally truly shine; the coat is a supposed metaphor for the hard shell we all need to shield ourselves from the harsh outside world. Dupieux, who, as usual, also wrote the screenplay and handled camera duties, has lost none of his sense of mischief. There are a few very amusing moments, including a nightly encounter with a woman who incorrectly guesses the type of film Georges is shooting and another scene in which the sad-sack protagonist tries to get his wedding ring off the corpse of a hotel clerk who committed suicide by shooting himself in the face. Denise’s deadpan explanation of her experience with the scrambled chronology of  Pulp Fiction  is also worth a laugh while  Deerskin ’s ending is brilliantly futile, which feels entirely fitting for such an absurd story, even if narrative momentum is abruptly cut short. But the actual plot is, of course, wafer-thin and the whole thing would fall apart if it weren’t for the committed performance from Dujardin. The actor, in a graying beard and with unkempt hair, has played this kind of crazy and opportunistic loser before, most recently in last year’s  I Feel Good   but also going back all the way to his creation of  Brice de Nice, which turned him into a movie star. Here, too, his Georges feels fully inhabited even though we only get a tiny sliver of backstory. When he starts speaking to his suede jacket on a clothes stand and then impersonates the jacket’s voice so the two can have a dialogue, it feels just like something a desperate, lonely and self-satisfied man like Georges would do. Denise and all other parts are really supporting players who are witnesses to — and occasionally unwitting participants in — Georges’ private madness. In terms of its world building, Dupieux and the production and costume designers have made a serious effort to ground things in a more recognizable reality than in most of the director’s previous outings. But the filmmaker’s tendency to only use violence for laughs and ignore its real-life consequences undermines this attempt to inject some gravitas into  Deerskin ’s otherwise lovingly detailed backdrop. Somewhat oddly, the musician and director didn't provide a score himself this time around, instead fully relying on pre-existing music. A man is obsessed with owning a late 60s-70s style deerskin jacket. So, he spends about 10,000 to buy one (when it should be free or next to it since no one today wants one) and then spends the rest of the film making up lies as he stays in a small French town.
I was excited to see this film when I attended the Philadelphia Film Festival. After all, I have really enjoyed the other films I've seen starring Jean Dujardin. However, after seeing it, I was left very, very cold. The reason is like some other French films, such as "Buffet Froid" it's an example of Absurdism. Absurdism is really NOT just putting bizarre and often disconnected events into a film and provoking a reaction in the audience. I honestly could tell that some folks in the audience LOVED it. and they were laughing at everything. even when it wasn't funny in the least. And, for me, the experiment simply got tiresome after about five minutes. Overall, a joyless, unfunny and dull film. one that some love but the average viewer will be left thinking "What the. did I just watch.

7 /10 A comedy as absurd as endearing This film describes a fetishistic relationship between George (interpreted by Jean Dujardin) and his suede jacket, bought 7000 euros after surreptitiously emptied the bank account he shares with his wife. The relationship he creates with this personified jacket will switch following two almost-concomitant events: the jacket will communicate to George its (his? ) wish and Georges will meet Denise (interpreted by Adèle Haenel). Although this film is devoid of rationality, some will see a profound message such as metaphor, allegory, symbolism,... Whatever, one thing is certain: Jean Dujardin and Adèle Haenel play excellently and the atmosphere created by Quentin Dupieux is deliberately both unhealthy and funny. Finally, even if the beginning of the film is confusing or disturbing (the whole film somehow, but you'll gradually get used to it), once the atmosphere is in place, you'll await the denouement with impatience. 25 out of 30 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 8 /10 MAMI MFF Review: Le daim (8 Stars) In a role that was made for Jean Dujardin, he acts like he has been doing this for a long time. By 'this' I mean executing an eccentric project that is about to take over his life and muddle his relationship with the world. And by 'the world' I mean the sorry village that his Georges character travels to after buying a vintage jacket made of 100% deerskin which also marks his obsession with it, something that both induces laughter in its audience and also highlights the crazy, primal nature of obsessive compulsion characterized by depression, loneliness, and unconditional enmity against the humankind. I have no words to describe the virulent turn Le daim (Deerskin) takes as Georges laughingly has his way by conspiring with himself to take forward his obsession with his deerskin jacket, which I should add is 'killer style' in his own words. Whether it is the inflated price that he pays for the second-hand jacket or the newfound skill of videography or mistaking a film editor with a creditor, Le daim has been written in a way that is guaranteed to make you laugh every five minutes. The outlandish plot, accentuated by terrific performances by Dujardin and Adele Haenel (who acts with her face and that's enough) and also by the peculiar style of referral writing (where the aftermath of an event in a scene is shown in the following one or the one after that) by director-writer Quentin Dupieux makes this comedy crime drama a blast experience. I can't recommend it more and I am definitely going to be watching more of Dupieux's work. Bravo! TN. However, after seeing it, I was left very, very cold. The reason is like some other French films, such as "Buffet Froid", it's an example of Absurdism. Absurdism is really NOT just putting bizarre and often disconnected events into a film and provoking a reaction in the audience. I honestly could tell that some folks in the audience LOVED they were laughing at when it wasn't funny in the least. And, for me, the experiment simply got tiresome after about five minutes. Seems like a quirky idea that was extended into a movie... without any real character development, motivations or purpose. The entire premise of a guys obsession for a jacket feels extremely forced. Watching, I always felt conscious of the scriptwriting process. All plot turns felt very forced. It honestly seemed like Quentin had taken a random bizarre idea, and tried to brainstorm ways to make it work across genres, in an arthouse package. Its an offbeat mixed genre cocktail that seems to suffer from an identity crisis. Comedy, Horror, drama, arthouse - but in trying to cross all genres just fails to have anything compelling about it. Not funny, clever, deep or exciting in anyway unfortunately. Dupieux has a strong visual style, the cinematography is well done... and Dujardin is excellent at whatever he touches, but he shouldn't have touched this script. The whole movie really missed the mark for me. I give it 5/10 because on paper it has everything I like... a strong visual style, quirky premise and fantastic lead man in Jean Dujardin... but unfortunately putting all the elements together was the most disappointing flaw for me. Cela dit, il n’a nul besoin de durer plus longtemps car, même en y mettant la meilleure volonté du monde, ce film absurde met quand même assez mal à l’aise très vite. L’absurde, le non-sens, moi je n’ai rien contre, au contraire. Ici, c’est un absurde noir, presque psychiatrique, et il faut faire un vrai effort pour accepter ce postulat pendant... Georges est un homme qui quitte tout du jour au lendemain pour s'acheter un blouson en daim avec lequel il va tisser une relation particulière. Une relation fétichiste poussée à l'extrême, jusqu'à la folie. C'est vrai que le blouson est important, autant que la matière du daim, mais on peut également parler de ce caméscope qu'il reçoit en... Ce film est très spécial et ne va pas plaire à tout le monde c'est certain. Pour ma part, je suis mitigée, d'un côté je l'ai trouvé intrigant, captivant durant toute la première moitié et d'un autre côté, il se trouve que toute la seconde moitié cela part trop en vrille, dans le gore, l'absurde et c'est franchement dérangeant. Bon en même temps, quand on connaît le réalisateur, c'est conforme à son univers et il faut aller voir... With Gorillaz, Albarn departed from the distinct Britpop of his band Blur through hip hop, electronic music, and world music through an "eccentrically postmodern " approach. [2] The band's 2001 debut album Gorillaz went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe and earned the group an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. [3] It was nominated for the Mercury Prize, but the nomination was withdrawn at the band's request. [4] Their second studio album, Demon Days (2005), went six times platinum in the UK [5] and double platinum in the US. [6] [7] [8] The third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach, was released on 3 March 2010. [14] History [ edit] Creation (1990–1999) [ edit] Musician Damon Albarn and comic creator Jamie Hewlett met in 1990 when guitarist Graham Coxon, a fan of Hewlett's work, asked him to interview Blur, a band Albarn and Coxon had recently formed. [15] The interview was published in Deadline magazine, home of Hewlett's comic strip Tank Girl. Hewlett initially thought Albarn was "arsey, a wanker"; despite becoming acquaintances with the band, they often did not get on, especially after Hewlett began seeing Coxon's ex-girlfriend Jane Olliver. [15] Despite this, Albarn and Hewlett started sharing a flat on Westbourne Grove in London in 1997. [16] Hewlett had recently broken up with Olliver and Albarn was at the end of his highly publicised relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. The musicians behind Gorillaz' first incarnation included Albarn, Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala, who had previously worked together on the track "Time Keeps on Slipping" for Deltron 3030 's eponymous debut album. [19] Although not released under the Gorillaz name, Albarn has said that "one of the first ever Gorillaz tunes" was Blur 's 1997 single " On Your Own ", which was released for their fifth studio album Blur. [20] Gorillaz (2000–03) [ edit] The band's first release was the EP Tomorrow Comes Today, released on 27 November 2000. The band's first single was " Clint Eastwood " and was released on 5 March 2001. It was produced by hip hop producer Dan the Automator and originally featured UK rap group Phi Life Cypher, but the version that appears on the album features American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, [21] known on the album as Del tha' Ghost Rapper, a spirit in the band's drummer Russel Hobbs. [22] The Phi Life Cypher version of "Clint Eastwood" appears on the B-side album G Sides. It was released in the United Kingdom on 21 November. The fourth and final single was the double A-side, " Kids with Guns " / " El Mañana ". It was released in the UK on 10 April 2006. [32] Demon Days has since gone six times platinum in the UK, [5] double platinum in the United States, [6] triple platinum in Australia [33] and has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. [34] At the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami on 28 August, Gorillaz won two awards for " Feel Good Inc. " featuring De La Soul, including the award for Breakthrough Video. [35] Gorillaz performed "Dirty Harry" at the 2006 Brit Awards in London, and the band were nominated for Best British Group, and Best British Album ( Demon Days). [13] Plans were unveiled for Gorillaz to go on a "holographic" world tour in 2007 and 2008. [36] The virtual members would be shown as virtual characters on stage using Musion Eyeliner technology, giving them a lifelike appearance on stage. The virtual characters were first used at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards on 3 November, [37] and again at the 2006 Grammy Awards, on 8 February 2006 with the addition of Madonna, where the band played a pre-recorded version of "Feel Good Inc. " [38] All the Kidrobot figures that were released. The black set, red set, special " Dare " Noodle, four-color set, white set and two-tone set During 16 October–2 November, a set of Gorillaz figures were released by Kidrobot to coincide with the release of Demon Days. Two variations of the set were released, known as the Red and Black editions, and a limited edition Noodle from the music video for " Dare " was also released. [39] Three new sets of Gorillaz vinyl figures were released in 2006. The basic set which was limited to 60, 000 was the two-tone set limited to 1, 000 and the white edition which was limited to 4, 000 were released. [40] On 26 October, the Gorillaz autobiography titled Rise of the Ogre by Riverhead Books, [41] was released on UK. [42] 2 November 2006 on US. On 30 October, the Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades DVD was released on UK. 25 October in Japan. 31 October in the US. And 11 November in Australia. It contains the most of the materials released by Gorillaz from 2004 to 2006. The MTV EMAs, Grammys and Brits live performances. Also included is the Gorillaz' MTV Cribs episode, the Phase Two Gorillaz bites, a new Kong Studios guide, a gallery, and short interviews. On 2 June 2006 the hopes for a Gorillaz film were revived, when Hewlett stated that they would be producing the film on their own. Film producer and The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Harvey Weinstein, was said to be in talks with Albarn and Hewlett. [43] In a September 2006 interview with Uncut magazine, Albarn was said that the band "has been a fantastic journey which isn't over, because we're making a film. We've got Terry Gilliam involved. But as far as being in a big band and putting pop music out there, it's finished. We won't be doing that any more. " [44] On 19 November 2007, a compilation album titled D-Sides was released. It contains B-sides and remixes from singles and bonus tracks for the band's second studio album Demon Days, as well as previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same sessions. [45] [46] Only one video out in 8 December 2004, " Rockit (or "Rock It"). [47] On 20 April 2009, a documentary titled Bananaz, was released on PAL / Region 0 DVD format. It contains the documentary film, directed by Ceri Levy, documents the previous seven years of the band. [48] The film was released online on the Babelgum website on 20 April 2009 followed by the DVD release on 1 June 2009. [49] Plastic Beach and The Fall (2007–13) [ edit] In late 2007, Albarn and Hewlett began working on Carousel, a new Gorillaz project which eventually evolved into the band's third studio album Plastic Beach. [50] [51] Albarn said "I'm making this the biggest and most pop record I've ever made in many ways, but with all my experience to try and at least present something that has got depth. " [51] The album features guest performances by Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Gruff Rhys, Mark E. Smith, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Kano, Bashy, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, sinfonia ViVA, and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. [51] [52] [53] On 18 January 2010, it was announced that Gorillaz would be headlining the final night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on 18 April 2010. [54] The first single from the album, " Stylo ", featuring Bobby Womack and Mos Def was made available for download 26 January 2010. [55] In October 2010, Albarn announced to the media that he would not let the cast of Glee cover the band's songs, claiming that the music on the Fox network's TV show is a "very poor substitute for the real thing". This statement led most people to believe that Gorillaz had been asked by Glee producers to lend their music to the show, which they had not. Albarn responded to the confusion with a laugh and said "and now they definitely won't. " [56] On 5 October 2010, Gorillaz announced their new single " Doncamatic " featuring Daley. [57] On 8 December 2010, Albarn confirmed that a Gorillaz album recorded on the American leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach tour would be released to download for free exclusively to paying fan club members from the Gorillaz website on Christmas Day, 25 December 2010. [58] The video for " Phoner to Arizona " was released on Gorillaz' website for free on 24 December, and a day later, their new album was released, entitled The Fall. [59] On 18 April 2011, Gorillaz announced the release of their own version of the iPad app iElectribe, by Korg – which features loops and samples taken from The Fall as well as other samples. The new version features a Gorillaz designed and styled interface, and is customised to generate Gorillaz samples from their album The Fall and includes 128 new sounds created by the band and 64 ready-to-use pre-programmed patterns from Gorillaz, Stephen Sedgwick (Gorillaz' engineer) and Korg. The app was based on Korg's Electribe: R device app. [60] [61] On 5 October 2011, Gorillaz released their first "greatest hits" compilation, The Singles Collection 2001–2011. [62] On 9 February 2012, Gorillaz announced " DoYaThing ", a single to promote the Gorillaz-branded Converse shoes that were soon to be released. The song would be part of Converse's "Three Artists, One Song" projects, with the two collaborators being James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and André 3000 of Outkast. An explicit, 13-minute-long version of the song became available for listening shortly after on Hewlett returned to direct the single's music video, featuring animated versions of the two collaborators on the track. [63] In April 2012, Albarn told The Guardian that he and Hewlett had fallen out and that future Gorillaz projects were "unlikely". [64] Tension between the two had been building, partly due to a belief held by Hewlett that his contributions to Gorillaz were being diminished. Speaking to The Guardian in April 2017, Hewlett explained: "Damon had half the Clash on stage, and Bobby Womack and Mos Def and De La Soul, and fucking Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Bashy and everyone else. It was the greatest band ever. And the screen on stage behind them seemed to get smaller every day. I’d say, ‘Have we got a new screen? ’ and the tour manager was like, ‘No, it’s the same screen. ’ Because it seemed to me like it was getting smaller. " [65] On 25 April 2012, in an interview with Metro, Albarn was more optimistic about Gorillaz' future, saying that once he had worked out his differences with Hewlett, he was sure that they would make another record. [66] On 24 June 2013, Hewlett stated that he and Albarn planned to someday record a follow-up to their 2010 album Plastic Beach. [67] [68] Humanz (2014–17) [ edit] In April 2014, Albarn told the National Post that he "wouldn't mind having another stab at a Gorillaz record. " [69] Two months later he reported that he had "been writing quite a lot of songs on the road for Gorillaz". [70] On 19 October 2014, Albarn told The Sydney Morning Herald that he was planning to release new Gorillaz material in 2016. [71] Albarn has described the music that he has written for the next Gorillaz album as being very upbeat, humorous, and positive, stating that he plans on giving the tracks "a benchmark of 125 bpm and nothing underneath that", while also suggesting that it once again may have many collaborations. [72] [73] [74] On 16 July 2015, Albarn stated during an interview for ABC's 7. 30 in Australia that he would begin work on the next Gorillaz album: "I'm starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record, I've just been really, really busy so I haven't had a chance. I'd love to just get back in to that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week. " [75] Speaking about his relationship with Hewlett, Albarn said that the pair's well-publicized fall-out has helped their relationship in the long term. [76] In October 2015, Albarn revealed to Rolling Stone that he and Hewlett were working on a new Gorillaz album. [77] In April 2016, Hewlett uploaded two video clips onto his Instagram showing the continued work on the album. The first clip featured Liam Bailey and rumoured executive producer on the album The Twilite Tone. The second clip was a time-lapse video featuring Albarn, Bailey, The Twilite Tone and Jean-Michel Jarre. [78] [79] [80] On 17 May 2016, Gorillaz were in the studio with Chicago-based hip hop artist Vic Mensa. [81] [82] [83] [84] On 20 September 2016, Gorillaz began an abridged retrospective timeline of the history of Gorillaz releases since 2000. [85] [86] [87] On 3 October 2016, Gorillaz began posting a series of interactive multimedia stories revolving around the fictional lives of each Gorillaz character since their hiatus to their social media profiles, beginning with The Book of Noodle (she ended up in Japan and tracked down a demon crime boss), then The Book of Russel (he was still a giant from the storyline of Plastic Beach, where he washed up on the shores of North Korea and starved so much he shrank back to normal size), then The Book of Murdoc (he was captured by the band's record label EMI at sea and told to make another album), and finishing with The Book of 2-D (he was swallowed by a whale named Massive Dick on Plastic Beach, and washed up on the shores of Mexico, where to survive he had to eat the whale's blubber, but it turned out he was just at an empty part of Cabo San Lucas). [88] Gorillaz (with Albarn to the left) on stage at the Brixton Academy in London, June 2017 On 8 October 2016, Noodle was given her own Instagram page and was announced to be the Global Ambassador of Jaguar Racing. [89] On 19 January 2017, a new song from the band entitled " Hallelujah Money " featuring Benjamin Clementine was released. [90] [91] On 6 March, Gorillaz announced the launch of their own festival, called Demon Dayz Festival, which took place on 10 June 2017 at Dreamland Margate in Margate, Kent, England. [92] [93] [94] The band headlined the festival. [95] On 17 March 2017, the tracklist of the forthcoming album was leaked online, showing guest features from a variety of artists including usual collaborators De La Soul, as well as new collaborators such as Grace Jones, Vince Staples, Pusha T, Rag'n'Bone Man, Anthony Hamilton, Kilo Kish and Kali Uchis. [96] [97] [98] On 23 March 2017, Gorillaz announced via Instagram that the new album will be entitled Humanz, with a scheduled release date of 28 April 2017. [99] On the official Gorillaz YouTube page, two new music videos were released for their track " Saturnz Barz ", one of which was in a 360º view. The track features vocals from Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan. The band also released an art video for the track " Andromeda ", featuring an animated planet in a galaxy. The track features the American rapper D. R. A. M., two more art videos were released: " Ascension " (featuring American rapper Vince Staples) and " We Got the Power " (featuring Jehnny Beth of the English rock band Savages and Noel Gallagher of Oasis). [100] On 6 April 2017, the fifth single from Humanz, " Let Me Out " (featuring Mavis Staples and Pusha T), was released, followed by a performance of the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on 27 April. [101] On 10 April 2017, a Gorillaz themed augmented reality app created in collaboration with Electronic Beats was released. On 24 April 2017, four days before the Humanz release date, another promotional single was uploaded, titled "The Apprentice". It is the only new song taken from the deluxe edition of Humanz. On 28 April 2017, Humanz was released worldwide. On 8 June 2017, the non-album single " Sleeping Powder " was released, along with an accompanying music video. On 10 June 2017, the band headlined the Demon Dayz Festival in Margate, England. On 4 August 2017 the band released " Strobelite " as a single with an accompanying music video. [102] On 31 October 2017, "Garage Palace" was released as a single from the "Super Deluxe" Edition of Humanz, which includes 14 additional songs and was released on 3 November 2017. [103] [104] [105] In December 2017, the band released a Humanz -themed, in-universe magazine called G Magazine. [106] On 21 February 2018, the band received the Brit Award for British Group for their work on Humanz. During their acceptance speech, a short-video of Murdoc was played, showing him being imprisoned for an unknown reason. [107] The Now Now (2018–19) [ edit] In an interview with Q Magazine in September 2017, Albarn hinted at another potential Gorillaz album being in production. He mentioned enjoying the spontaneity of recording and debuting music while on tour, similarly to the band's 2010 release The Fall, but expressed desire to make it a comparatively more "complete" record, adding that "If we're going to do more with Gorillaz we don't want to wait seven years because, y'know, we're getting on a bit now". [108] At the end of the same month on 30 September 2017 while touring for Humanz, the band debuted a new song in Seattle called "Idaho". Hewlett confirmed later on in December 2017 that the band planned to release a follow-up album to Humanz in 2018, citing a desire to keep the band going rather than take any prolonged breaks as the band had usually done with previous projects. Hewlett described several of the demos and new material as a "new direction" for the band, stating that he hopes to move the band's artwork in a similar direction. [109] During a performance in Chile on the final leg of the Humanz Tour, Albarn confirmed that the new album was coming "very soon" and premiered a new song called " Hollywood " featuring Jamie Principle and Snoop Dogg. [110] On 26 May 2018, the album was officially announced to be titled The Now Now, being co-produced by James Ford. [111] [112] On 31 May, the music video for the single " Humility " featuring George Benson, was released alongside "Lake Zurich". [113] From 7 to 21 June, the band released the singles "Sorcererz", "Fire Flies", and "Hollywood". [114] [115] [116] The Now Now was released on 29 June 2018. On 13 September, " Tranz " was released as a single along with a music video. [117] All of the songs from the album have a visualizer except "Humility". In the fictional Gorillaz storyline, the band introduced Ace from Cartoon Network 's animated series The Powerpuff Girls as a temporary bassist of the band, filling in for the imprisoned Murdoc Niccals (as seen in the band's Brit Awards acceptance speech for Humanz). [118] From 4 June to 26 October 2018, the band ran a bi-weekly text-adventure ARG called "Free Murdoc", in which the player assists Murdoc as he attempts to escape from prison. [119] [120] [121] [122] Murdoc was reunited with the band on 20 September, in time to join them on the final leg of The Now Now Tour. [123] On 25 October, the band announced they would be partnering with G-Shock to create a line of Gorillaz watches. [124] To promote the watches, the band released a monthly web-series called Mission M101. [125] [126] On 21 November 2019, the band announced a documentary covering the production of Humanz and The Now Now and their accompanying tours titled Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [127] It was released on 16 December via a worldwide theatrical screening. [128] Eight days later, an edited version of the documentary subtitled the "Director's Cut" was uploaded through the Gorillaz official YouTube page in three parts: Humanz, [129] Humanz World Tour [130] and The Now Now. [131] Song Machine (2020–present) [ edit] On January 28th, the band officially released images via social media teasing a concept entitled Song Machine. A 23-second promotional track entitled "Song Machine Theme Tune" was released on streaming services with an accompanying video. [132] The following day, further information was released regarding the project, revealing that new "episodes" would be released spontaneously throughout the year. [133] Each episode will feature previously unannounced guest musicians on new Gorillaz material, with the first being " Momentary Bliss ", which features both British rapper Slowthai and the Kent -based punk rock duo Slaves. [134] Upon the premiere of "Momentary Bliss", Albarn revealed that the group had been in the studio with ScHoolboy Q and Sampa the Great among others, although he did say that these songs were likely to be saved for future series of Song Machine. [135] The group also teased a collaboration with Australian band Tame Impala on Instagram. [136] Style [ edit] Writers and critics have variously described Gorillaz' music as alternative rock, [137] art pop, [138] hip hop, [139] pop, [140] trip hop, [141] dark pop, [142] alternative hip hop, [143] rap rock, [144] indie rock, [145] electronica, [2] bedroom pop, [146] dance-rock, [147] new wave, [148] funk [148] and worldbeat. [2] The band's aesthetic and general approach has been described as postmodern. [2] According to AllMusic Gorillaz blend Britpop and hip-hop, [149] while The Guardian described the band as "a sort of dub /hip-hop/ lo-fi indie/ world music hybrid". [150] According to PopMatters, the band's early work foreshadowed "the melding of hip-hop, rock, and electronic elements in pop music" that grew in significance in the next decade. [151] Live performances [ edit] Gorillaz performed Demon Days at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in April 2006. In March 2001, Gorillaz played their first show at the Scala in London before embarking on a tour later that summer, with one date in Paris and two in Japan. The show, called Gorillaz Live, saw the live band playing behind a giant projector screen which covered the whole stage, on which was projected various visuals and images created by Hewlett. After taking a short break over the holidays, the tour resumed with a North American leg in February 2002. [152] In November 2005, Gorillaz performed Demon Days Live, a five night residency at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, England in which the album Demon Days was presented in its entirety. The event was filmed by an EMI film crew for a DVD release, Demon Days Live, in late March 2006. It was later announced that an American version of the event would take place in April 2006 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Within an hour of release tickets were sold out. [153] The show of 6 April was filmed for a live webcast at MSN Video. [154] Palladia (then known as MHD) also broadcast an Apollo Theater show in HDTV on 31 December 2006. [155] Gorillaz performing at the Roundhouse in London, April 2010 In March 2010, Gorillaz began a short six date tour as "rehearsal" shows for their headlining slot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The shows were open exclusively to Gorillaz Sub Division fan club members and featured no visuals whatsoever. These performances were the band's first public performances in four years. Gorillaz headlined the final night of the Coachella Festival on 18 April 2010 as their first proper, full show. On 27 April they were the main guests on Later... with Jools Holland on the BBC. In addition, Gorillaz played a two-night residency at London's Camden Roundhouse (29 and 30 April 2010). Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash performed guitar and bass respectively with the band and more than once in the evening chords from the Clash song " Guns of Brixton " were heard as a subtle reference to their presence. [156] Gorillaz embarked on the Escape to Plastic Beach Tour in October 2010, with some concerts preceding festival dates in the summer, such as at the Byblos Festival in Lebanon, the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, headlining the Glastonbury Festival in England and one show at the Citadel of Damascus in Syria. [157] [158] The tour took them across North America in October, Europe in November, and finally through Australia, New Zealand, and with one date in Hong Kong in December. [159] During the final show of the tour at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on 21 December 2010, Albarn announced that it would be their final show with the Plastic Beach line up. [160] On 8 July 2017, Gorillaz embarked upon the Humanz Tour, the band's second world tour and first since 2010. With 53 scheduled shows and lasting over a year, it was Gorillaz' longest tour in their history. [161] On 6 December, Gorillaz announced they would be playing BoomTown Fair as an "exclusive one-off UK show". [162] After 53 performances, on 30 March 2018, Humanz Tour concluded in São Paulo, Brazil. [163] The tour was followed almost immediately by The Now Now Tour, starting in June 2018 in Nuremberg, Germany. On 20 October, Gorillaz played " Song 2 " by Blur, at the Demon Dayz Festival, with Graham Coxon, in Los Angeles, California. Gorillaz: Reject False Icons is a documentary following the band through the creation of their latest two albums, ‘Humanz’ and ‘The Now Now’ and the subsequent world tour directed by Denholm Hewlett, son of Gorillaz co-creator Jamie. If you were expecting any big focus on the animated side of the band then you will go away disappointed, but there is more than enough content here to keep fans entertained. 2017’s ‘Humanz’ album has an abundance of collaborators featured on it, and the front end of the documentary focuses on them, with the likes of Mavis Staples, Peven Everett and Kali Uchis being shown recording their parts of their respective songs, but the highlight for me was Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn, perhaps best known for his roles in Star Wars: Rogue One and Captain Marvel, really hamming it up for the interludes that are scattered throughout Humanz; everyone in the room during Ben’s recording seemed to be having a genuinely fun time, and in my screening this echoed throughout the crowd. The film really gets going when Gorillaz are on tour, and you get the full scale of just how big an operation it is, especially with the ever increasing number of guests that will be popping up on any given night. It did seem to skip through things that I would have expected to have been highlighted more, for example their ‘Demon Dayz’ festivals in Margate and L. A were only shown relatively briefly, and their big 2 nights at the o2 arena in London were skipped over  quickly, but they did cram in footage from as many shows as possible. This tour was also when Damon and co recorded ‘The Now Now’ and the footage of recordings in make-shift hotel room studios of the likes of ‘Souk Eye’ and ‘Humility’ being constructed are some of the best parts of the documentary. Actual live performance footage was scattershot throughout the latter half of the film, and perhaps it would have made things more cohesive and less thrown together if a few full songs were shown but again I feel the aim here was to show as much variety as possible. Overall, ‘Reject False Icons’ is great for hardcore Gorillaz fans, and those who really loved ‘Humanz’ and ‘The Now Now’, with genuinely interesting behind the scenes footage and tour antics to please those fans, but I feel it does have enough of interest for those just casually interested in the band or Damon in general, even with the lack of focus on the animation side of things. 75%.

I'm conflicted whether or not to see this today because apparentlt there's a lack of animated sections/art which kind of puts me off, but i do love gorillaz, so. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.
In the end, it simply wasn't interesting to watch and that is something no amount of blank long gazes and gratuitous nudity can fix.
If you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and watch 'The Lives of Others' a 2006 German film that shares a similar theme but actually does it justice.

I went into this film with no expectations at all, didn't even really know what the film was about, just saw the really exciting cast and I was in. Nothing would have prepared me for the totally shocking. True Story. that was told in this film, it has stayed with me ever since I watched it.
I'm not sure I know enough words in the English dictionary to describe the total disbelief in the whole story and journey of Walter McMillian and Bryan Stevenson played by Jamie Foxx and Michael B Jordan respectively. Needless to say that I had never heard of the central case of this film involving Mr McMillian nor the incredible work of Mr Stevenson and his organisation. I think it definitely benefited my viewing experience because I really had no idea what was going to happen.
Wow what an emotional roller coaster in many respects. I have complete and utter disgust with the pathetic case that was brought against Walter McMillian in the first place. basically the police needed to desperately catch someone so they intimidated another death row inmate to testify against an innocent man, so he could get a reduced sentence. Then there is the small fact of not using the witness accounts of black people who would prove Mr McMillian's innocence. nor have any black people on the jury. br> Then there is the other side of the emotion. from disgust and almost anger, to just outright sadness. this film is deeply horrifying and sad due to the nature of the subject matter. the scene when Herbert Richardson gets executed, is a huge emotional punch to the gut. it must also be said that the end credits are also just as educationally horrifying. thankfully there are some silver linings!
All of this going through my head is obviously due to the film being good. oh yeah did I not mention that. why is the Imdb score so low. The directing is solid but nothing mind blowing. it didn't need to be. The acting in this film is what just adds that extra special touch to elevate the film from good to great, for me! Michael B Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson all of whom are just great in the film. no more to say. br> Overall I am just shocked by the story, it took my breath away! Being from the UK where the death penalty has not been accepted for quite some time. it is completely dumfounding why its still used and accepted in the US. Yeah those statistics at the end is almost vomit inducing. 80% out of 100 its a very good film highly recommend. people need to hear this story, peoples eyes need to be opened.
